Description:The Minnesota Association of Townships is a voluntary membership organization representing 1,779 of Minnesota’s 1,782 organized townships and more than 9,000 elected township officers. Over 924,158 people reside in Minnesota townships and many others recreate and own property in townships.
It is not uncommon for townships to organize or dissolve over time causing the number of townships to change. Townships can organize from unorganized land (mostly in the Northern part of the state) while merging, annexation and incorporation into a city cause townships to dissolve. The number 1,802 is the most townships the state has ever had.
As the association for townships, we provide education, training and technical services to township officers and represent townships before the state legislature and state agencies. MAT is the founder of Minnesota Center for Small Communities (MCSC). MAT also provides insurance to the townships through the MAT Insurance Agency.
The Information Library has been formed to provide certain pertinent information to township officers, please click on the link to access the documents and materials available. The Library will be updated periodically with additional materials.
Minnesota Association of Townships serves the Northland, Arrowhead, Duluth MN Superior WI MSA, Aitkin, Carlton, Cook, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake, and St. Louis county areas.
