Description:

The Iron Mining Association of Minnesota (IMA) mission is to promote an iron ore industry that will provide long-term growth and prosperity for all stakeholders through profitability in a competitive, global market.

Our membership is made up of the six iron ore mines located in Northeast Minnesota as well as hundreds of vendors that supply their products and services to the mining industry. The companies that operate the six mines in Minnesota include ArcelorMittal, Cliffs Natural Resources and US Steel. Iron mining contributes more than $3.1 billion to the economy of Minnesota every year in the form of purchases, wages and benefits, taxes and royalties accounting for more than 34% on NE Minnesota Gross Regional Product. Taxes and royalties alone are more than $148 million of which $56.9 million go to support education across Minnesota.

The mines employ 3,000 men and women directly with an additional 10,000 to 12,000 employed by the vendors who provide products and services to the mines.

New mines and production lines are estimated to increase these numbers significantly. Several new mines already under construction and recent members of the IMA will produce value added products. Those mines are owned by Essar Steel Minnesota, Magnetation and Mesabi Nugget. If all the projects slated to be built move forward they will add an additional $6 billion to the region.

Iron Mining Association of Minnesota serves the Northland, Arrowhead, Duluth MN Superior WI MSA, Aitkin, Carlton, Cook, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake, and St. Louis county areas.
