Description:

Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) is a specially designated area, in or adjacent to a U.S. Customs Port of Entry, which is considered to be outside the Customs Territory of the U.S.

A FTZ can be used to store foreign or domestic goods, repackage materials, assemble products, manufacture or re-export goods without paying Customs duty. Merchandise can be held indefinitely within a FTZ without any payment of Customs duty.

No duty is ever paid on re-exported merchandise.

If the merchandise is sold domestically, no duty is paid until it leaves the zone or sub-zone.

Generally, no duty is paid on waste or yield loss.

Duty on scrap is eliminated or reduced.

Generally, if foreign merchandise is manufactured into a product with a lower duty rate within a FTZ or sub-zone, then the lower duty rate applies on the foreign content when duty is paid.

Merchandise may be:
– Assembled
– Tested
– Sampled
– Relabeled
– Manufactured
(upon special approval from U.S. government)
– Stored
– Salvaged
– Processed
– Repackaged
– Destroyed
– Mixed
– Manipulated

FTZ #259 is one of two FTZs in The Northland. FTZ #51 is located in Duluth.
