Aitkin (2010 Census 2,165) is located on the Mississippi River in northern Minnesota. Its primary industry is tourism, but there is a developing base of manufacturers, particularly in metal fabrication and wood products. Properties with tax-free Job Opportunity Building Zone (JOBZ) status provide a major incentive for new and expanding businesses.

Aitkin is at the crossroads of two major highways, giving it convenient access to regional urban centers. Local amenities include a health care complex, two public schools, an airport and many trails, parks, and campgrounds.
